This oil painting captures the view towards Penallta Colliery from Graig Road, Hengoed, the date is mid 1980's. A locomotive and wagons of coal can be seen on the Cylla branch line heading South.
Whilst the colliery closed in 1991, the winding house and the winding gear still remain. The main site of the colliery being developed into the Redrow Cwm Calon housing estate. The Blacksmiths and other buildings were also kept and these have been converted into private dwellings.
The Nant Cylla flows alongside the branch line, hidden amongst the trees, but can be seen low on the left. In 2019 this view is much the same.
