This painting shows the River Taff and the two bridges along Bridge Street, Pontypridd.
The first and oldest stone bridge was built during the period of 1746 - 1754
by William Edwards and at that time was the longest single span bridge in the world.
Due to collapsing, the bridge was rebuilt a number of times, finally arriving at the structure shown with the holes on each side.
The bridge was so steep, carriages found it difficult to use so a second, three-arch Victoria Bridge,
was built by Thomas Jenkins around 1857 to carry road traffic. The original is now used as a footbridge.
